Carports & Verandas: Year-Round Protection for Your Home

Black SUV parked under a modern carport attached to a brick house.

Carports

A carport is a semi-enclosed shelter designed specifically to protect vehicles. It is a cost-effective alternative to a garage, offering weather protection while remaining open for easy access and natural ventilation.

  • Primary Purpose: Protecting cars, motorhomes, or bikes from rain, frost, bird droppings, and UV damage (which fades paintwork).
  • Placement: Usually installed over a driveway, either freestanding or as a lean-to attached to the side of the house.
  • Materials: * Aluminium: The 2026 standard for durability and low maintenance.
    • Treated Timber: For a more traditional, "organic" look.

  • Roofing: Typically polycarbonate (budget), toughened glass (premium), or increasingly, solar PV panels to charge electric vehicles.

Verandas

A veranda is an open-walled, roofed gallery or porch attached to the exterior of a building (usually the rear). It acts as an "outdoor room," allowing you to enjoy your garden even when it's raining.

  • Primary Purpose: Creating a sheltered transition between the home and garden. It is designed for people, not vehicles—housing outdoor furniture, dining sets, or even outdoor kitchens.

  • Placement: Almost always attached to the rear or side of the house, often covering a patio or decking area.

  • Key Trends (2026): Many modern verandas now feature glass sliding walls or zip-screens, allowing them to be closed off in winter, blurring the line between a veranda and a conservatory.

  • Materials: * Powder-coated Aluminium: Most popular in Anthracite Grey or Bronze.
    • Laminated Safety Glass: Allows natural light into the adjacent indoor room while keeping the patio dry.
